A healthy lifestyle is made in the kitchen. You can workout as much as you want, but unless your diet is on point, you likely won’t see the results that you want. Food can sometimes be the most complicated and daunting part of trying to have a healthy lifestyle. For some people, that may mean following a strict diet like the Whole30 or going Keto (read how to pick a diet that’s right for you, and why I have decided to not follow any particular one here). For others, it can just be simple swaps in the kitchen that help keep you on track.
Here are five gadgets that I think all kitchens need, in order to keep you on track and make it easier to stay healthy.
For real. I’m putting this as number one for a reason. I’m a huge popcorn lover, and it’s one of my favourite snacks. It’s low calorie and it’s filling. Now, I’m not talking about the kind of popcorn that you get at the movie theatre or the bag that you put in your microwave. I’m talking about the actual healthy popcorn that you make using an air popper. You can easily mix up the flavours by adding seasonings, or even something easy like paprika to add some spice. Just be careful how much butter you put on top!
This was one of the first things I bought when I moved out, and I have used it regularly ever since. I honestly believe that everyone needs to have a salad spinner. Sure, you can dry your lettuce on a tea towel, but that seems slightly less hygienic, plus it takes longer. When you can cut your lettuce, wash it and spin it out in less than 10 minutes, it makes it way easier to keep lettuce on hand for your daily salad. Tip: keep it in your fridge in a Ziploc bag with some paper towel to help absorb the water. It’ll help keep the lettuce fresh for longer. Grab a handful and add some chicken for lunch, or put some on your plate for an easy side at supper time.
I don’t know what I did with my life before I had a blender. Smoothies are one of the easiest meals to take on-the-go and they wouldn’t be possible without a blender. It’s a great way to use up some of your overripe fruit or some of your fruit & veggies scraps. You can get a ton of nutrients in just one snack or meal, as long as you make it right (check out some of my smoothie tips here!). Not to mention, you can also mix up some milkshakes for when you want a treat (because you should always treat yourself, in moderation).
What good is meal prep if you don’t have enough containers? Whether you’re making your lunches for the week or preparing your fruits and veggies, you need to make sure you have enough containers on hand to store it all. Compact containers are usually the best because they are easier to stack and save room in the fridge or freezer. If you haven’t been meal prepping, you need to start (find out why). There are so many benefits to it, but you definitely need to make sure you have the containers for it before you begin.
Steaming your veggies is one of the best ways to go. It keeps away the extra calories from oil or butter, and if you do it just the right amount, it keeps the peak nutrient levels. This works great for either fresh or frozen veggies, but I prefer to use frozen. Veggies are frozen at their peak, which means you’re getting the biggest bang for your buck with nutrients. Plus, you can keep them on hand and don’t have to worry about them spoiling in just a matter of days!
You can either use an electric steamer for this, or many pot sets will come with a separate steamer pot that you can place on top of one with water in it. Either one works the same, both produce the same results!
These are just 5 items that will help you have a healthy kitchen, but there are so many more on top of that. A spiralizer will give you healthy noodles and water bottles with ensure you always stay hydrated. Small items like this could make all the difference in whether you stay on track with your goals.
